The Great Wall of China was built to protect the Chinese states and Empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe. Nomadic tribes from territories now a part of Mongolia and Manchuria often swooped down marauding into the areas ruled by the emperor. In 221, B.C, Qin Shi Huang conquered all the surrounding states and united them under his empire. Without this amazing stone and brick structure, Han, Qin, Ming and many other dynasties, could not be protected without it. A negative impact that it gave was that many people died in the construction of the Great Wall. The Forbidden CityThe Forbidden City was created in 1406-1420 under the orders of the powerful Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
The former imperial palace which was the home to twenty-four Chinese emperors for over 491 years between 1420 and 1911. The Forbidden City is 960 meters long and 750 meters wide. it has 9,999 rooms - a room being the space between four pillars. The Forbidden City is stationed in China's capital, Beijing. The well guarded palace is surrounded by a moat 3,800 metres long and 52 metres wide. Intruders were discouraged by guards in watchtowers with bow and arrows. There are five entrances to the gate - the central one reserved for the Emperor. There is a hill made from the dirt excavated from the moat surrounding the Forbidden City, and according to Feng Shui, keeps the evil spirits from the north from entering. In total, 24 emperors occupied the Forbidden City, so named because it could only be accessed by the emperor, his immediate family, his women and thousands of eunuchs (castrated male servants) and officials.
